Namkaran Sanskar is one of the significant rituals in Hindu culture. It is done on the 10th or 12th day of the child's birth or as per the Muhurta decided by the Priest. It is one of the 16 rituals of Hundi, which is done to name a person after their birth, whether it is a boy or a girl. The complete belief of this ritual is to name the child to make him pure, healthy, long-lived, spiritual and to get the blessings of all, and to set a bright identity for his future.

The name is selected specially, and the Priest tells the first letter of the name. In Hinduism, it is believed that the personality of the child is formed according to the name. Different alphabets have different meanings and beliefs, and there are auspicious letters selected for girls and boys which reflect their image, primarily. For example, Boy Name Start with S is a good choice because it is believed that people with the name 'S' are very loyal, romantic and generous. Traditionally, this holy ritual is performed in a specific manner following Vedic rituals and astrological principles.

Preparation for Namkaran Sanskar

Before the Namkaran Sanskar worship, clean the house thoroughly and sprinkle Gangajal. Now prepare the place of worship. Invite your loved ones and close relatives to get their blessings. First of all, invite a Priest to perform the worship and take out the name. Bring the main items for  the worship, such as fruits, flowers, rice, ghee, coconut and traditional prasad like incense sticks, in advance and keep them at the place of worship. Also, bring utensils or other items to be distributed at the end of the worship.

Method of Namkaran Sanskar

Ganesh Worship -  In Hinduism, every morning at the beginning of work, Lord Ganesha is worshipped so that he can complete the job smoothly and bless everyone. Aarti of Lord Ganesha is also performed at the start of the Namkaran ceremony.

Invocation of Gods - The priest and blessings are obtained by chanting Vedic mantras and invoking God and Kuldevi. During this time, the child is seated in the lap of the father or maternal uncle only.

Horoscope and Nakshatra Analysis -  After the invocation of the gods, the priest prepares the birth horoscope of the baby using the date, time and place of birth and gives it to the parents, which shows the constellations and the position of the planets and the sun at the time of the child's birth. Through the horoscope, the astrologer suggests the name of the zodiac sign of the child and the first letter for naming, so that the parents can keep their favourite name according to that letter.

Naming of the child -  Now the name is whispered in the right ear of the child by the aunt, father, mother or any elder member of the family as per different beliefs. After that, it is spoken in front of everyone.

Blessings and Aarti -  After the announcement of the name, everyone blesses the baby with rice, flower petals and holy water. After this, Prasad is distributed, and whatever has been brought for distribution is given to everyone, and then they are bid farewell.
