Who is Eligible for Udyam Registration? Find Out Here

Starting and growing a business in India has never been easier, thanks to the Udyam Registration system. Launched by the Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME), this online registration helps small businesses get official recognition and access to various government benefits.

But the first question most people ask is: Who can register on the Udyam portal? If you're wondering whether your business is eligible for Udyam Registration, this guide is for you.

What is Udyam Registration?

Before diving into eligibility, let’s quickly understand what Udyam Registration is.

Udyam Registration is a government-issued certificate that officially classifies your business as a Micro, Small, or Medium Enterprise (MSME). It is done through an online portal . Once registered, your business can enjoy benefits like easier loans, subsidies, and participation in government tenders.

Who is Eligible for Udyam Registration?

Not every business is eligible. Udyam Registration is only meant for businesses that fall under the MSME category. Let’s break down the eligibility:

1. Business Types That Can Apply

Udyam Registration is open to various types of businesses, including:

  • Proprietorship firms

  • Partnership firms

  • Hindu Undivided Families (HUF)

  • Private Limited Companies

  • Public Limited Companies

  • Limited Liability Partnerships (LLP)

  • Co-operative Societies

  • Self-Help Groups (SHGs)

  • Trusts

Whether you are a one-person startup or a partnership firm, you can apply—as long as your business meets the size limits mentioned below.

2. Size of Business – Investment and Turnover Limits

Udyam Registration depends on two main factors:

  • Investment in plant, machinery, or equipment

  • Annual turnover (total yearly sales)

Here’s how businesses are classified:

  • Micro Enterprise – If your investment is up to ₹2.5 crore and turnover is up to ₹10 crore

  • Small Enterprise – If your investment is up to ₹25 crore and turnover is up to ₹100 crore

  • Medium Enterprise – If your investment is up to ₹125 crore and turnover is up to ₹500 crore

Important:
If your business exceeds these limits, you are not eligible to register under Udyam.

3. Valid Aadhaar and PAN Card

To apply for Udyam Registration, the following documents are needed:

  • Aadhaar Card of the business owner (for proprietorship) or authorised signatory (for other firms).

  • PAN Card of the business entity.

The portal will automatically pull your business data from the Income Tax and GST databases, so having a valid PAN and GST number is a must.

4. Only for Manufacturing and Service Enterprises

You are eligible for Udyam Registration if your business falls under one of these categories:

  • Manufacturing – e.g., making clothes, furniture, tools, food products, etc.

  • Service sector – e.g., IT services, repair services, salons, consulting, marketing, etc.

Note: Trading businesses (like shops selling goods) are not eligible under Udyam as they are not considered MSMEs.

5. Even New Businesses Can Apply

Just starting your business? You don’t need to wait for years to register. As long as you plan to set up a business that fits the criteria above, you can apply right away.

The Udyam system encourages startups and new entrepreneurs to register early and take advantage of government schemes from the beginning.

Why Should Eligible Businesses Register?

If your business fits the eligibility criteria, here’s why you should go ahead and register:

  • Access to Loans with Lower Interest Rates: Banks offer collateral-free loans and lower interest rates to MSMEs registered on the Udyam portal.

  • Subsidies and Schemes: You can benefit from government subsidies, reimbursement schemes, and priority in public procurement.

  • Easier to Get Licenses and Approvals: Being a registered MSME simplifies the process of getting various approvals and licenses.

  • Protection from Delayed Payments: The MSME Act ensures that if a buyer delays payment, your registered business has legal protection.

What Happens If You're Not Eligible?

If your business does not fall under the MSME category, you cannot register under Udyam. However, you may still be eligible for other registrations, like:

  • GST Registration

  • Shop & Establishment License

  • FSSAI (for food businesses)

  • IEC (for import/export)

Always check which registration suits your type of business.

Note: You can also Cancel Udyam Registration from our portal

Conclusion

Udyam Registration is a powerful tool for small businesses in India. If you are a startup, MSME, or service provider, and your business meets the simple eligibility rules, you should definitely register your business under Udyam.

Not only does it give you a legal identity, but it also opens the door to funding, subsidies, and growth opportunities.
